Tasmania netballers will jet off to take on the countries best young players in the National Netball Championships which starts on Thursday.

Both the best under 17s and under 19s girls will take part in the week long tournament at Sydney Netball Central.

After a seventh place finish last season, under-17s coach Fiona Geappen expressed excitement about her side’s potential.

“The girls are really excited, it has been a long four months of them training every weekend and prepare for this week,” Geappen said.

“We have a tough challenge in New South Wales on the opening day but then play NT and ACT on day two.

“It will be good to see where we sit after a tough challenge against NSW and then take on who winnable games.”

Under-19s coach Andrew Jackson said “it is a very exciting time for the girls and for everyone involved”.

“We beat SA in the fifth place playoff last year and I think the key to this year is to enjoy the time and succeed as a team,” Jackson said.

“We have Queensland up first and that will be a great challenge to see where we are at.

“Usually Victoria and New South Wales are the strongest teams so we look forward to challenging them but seeing how we challenge the other teams as well.”

The championships will be live streamed on KommunityTV on the Mercury website.
