It could have been the MCG on Anzac Day watching Dane Swan burst through the middle and launch a long shot at goal.
Only it wasn’t the “G”, it was Huonville Oval on a perfect autumn afternoon, and the flashy football was still trademark Swan.

It was standing room only when local footy fans packed the place to see the former Collingwood superstar weave his magic for the Huonville Lions in their SFL Premier League contest against New Norfolk.
The car park overflowed into the surrounding areas and hundreds were shoe-horned into the wet area to watch the 258-game Magpie premiership-winning Brownlow Medalist become a Lion.
Wearing his trademark No. 36 guernsey, Swan lined up at half-back and Eagles small forward Zane Lester became the unluckiest man in the SFL.
Covering the ground better than most 41-year-olds, Swan was easy to spot with his signature run and abundance of tattoos.
He helped Huonville to an impressive 63-point win in its Community League game, which was a far cry from the Anzac Day and finals blockbusters Swan dominated.
Swamped after the game by kids and adults wanting selfie, Swan enjoyed his time in the Huon Valley.
“It was fun,” he said.
“It’s one of the best days I’ve had in Tassie and I loved it.
“We had a win, which was the main thing, I did what I had to and the boys played great.”
It was Swans’ idea to play off half-back, where he set up the Lions defensive efforts.
In the final term he went to full-forward, landed a couple of marks and got booed by the Huonville section of the wet area when he dished off rather than kick a goal.
A bit later he slotted a ripper from heavy traffic in a pack.
“I was starting to get a bit of pressure to kick one and I managed to kick a couple,” Swan said.
Swan has a quick turn-around before his next game.
“I’m playing with Wagga on Good Friday, and that should be a good crowd so I’ve got a six-day turn-around,” he said.
“I reckon I’ll be ready by Friday morning.”
Huonville’s goals mostly came off the boot of Ethan Brock, who bagged six, while he was almost matched by Eagle Jacob Daley, who kick five of New Norfolk’s seven majors.

PREVIEW
It’s not everyday you pack out a community football ground but Huonville Lions are expecting a full house when they host New Norfolk on Saturday.
In what is the clubs first ‘big event’ to start the year, it includes a raffle to be able to win a car plus rub shoulders with one of the best AFL players to play the game, Dane Swan.
The 2011 Brownlow Medallist will lace up the boots for the Lions for just the one game, before pulling out the winning ticket where footy lovers can meet and greet Swan after.
KommunityTV will exclusively live stream the match from 2pm, with the women’s clash also broadcast from 12pm.
Lions coach Callen Daly said it will be a pretty special moment for him.
“As a coach you don’t often get to have a Brownlow Medallist in your side,” Daly said.
“The thing about it is, you don’t forget these types of moments, whether it be me coaching him, or a player playing with or against him.
“I remember playing against Fev (Brendan Fevola) when he was playing for New Norfolk, you just don’t forget these types of days.
“The club wanted to start the year off with a bang and make a big event.
“So along with Dane playing, we have the raffle for the Kia as well.
“It will bring plenty of footy lovers down to watch him play and then get the chance to win a car plus get a photo with Swanny after as well.”
Since his retirement from AFL in 2016, Swan has made a comeback to footy, playing for local clubs around Australia.
The 2010 premiership player last played in Hobart, playing for OHA in June 2022 in the Old Scholars Football Association.
Both Huonville and New Norfolk have recruited heavily over the pre-season and will get the opportunity to put their new looking squads to the test for the first time this Saturday.
The two teams met in the final game of 2024 with the Lions running out victors by 96 points which secured third spot and missing out on a grand final, going down to Lindisfarne in the preliminary final.
Bounce-down for the much anticipated match is at 2pm on Saturday and you can watch it live on KommunityTV.
