PASSENGERS travelling on The Ghan who pre-empted the declaration of Greater Adelaide as a hot spot have avoided getting locked out of the Territory.
NT Health confirmed The Ghan’s services to the NT had been suspended, following the NT chief health officer’s declaration, effective Wednesday.
A spokesman for Journey Beyond, which operates The Ghan, said some passengers disembarked the southbound train in Alice Springs in anticipation of being barred from returning to the Territory if they chose to enter Adelaide.
“There were some guests on the southbound journey (due to arrive in) Adelaide on Tuesday, July 20 who chose to disembark in Alice Springs on the 18th as they wouldn’t have been able to enter SA and then return,” the spokesman said.
“Those who disembarked in Alice did not have to quarantine.

“The northbound journey that was in progress got to Darwin before any lockdowns occurred so this trip was completed by all guests.”
The spokesman said they’re hoping The Ghan can resume operating out of Adelaide on Wednesday, July 28 “pending border openings”.
It follows previous Ghan services being halted due to Covid-19 border restrictions and passengers ordered into quarantine.
