Making a splash in the name of mobility and wellness, more than 1000 Territorians have taken a dip in Palmerston Regional Hospital’s hydrotherapy pool.

The warm water pool is now permanently opening to community group bookings and will have dedicated allied health staff on site.

The $3.1m facility was previously available exclusively to NT Health patients after it opened in 2019.

The pool then opened to community groups including antenatal women, cancer patients and Defence members over a 12 month trial.

More than 1400 people accessed the pool between April and November this year.

Palmerston Regional Hospital’s allied health manager Lorraine Horseman says the facility and on-site services can help a range of people, from those with chronic pain to spinal injuries, stroke victims to amputees.

The pool also has a wheelchair ramp for those with limited mobility.

“We’ve got rehab, we’ve got the geriatric evaluation management team, we’ve got the pain health team, all of which use this extensively throughout the week,” Ms Horseman said.

“In the last 12 months we’ve been able to open the pool to lots of other groups, lots of private therapists.”

Chief Minister Natasha Fyles says the facility improves the quality of life for all kinds of patients.

“Hydrotherapy enables an earlier start to regaining muscle strength, assists in pain relief and shortens recuperative times,” she said.

“With the expansion of the hydrotherapy pool use, external providers such as NDIS providers and private physiotherapists have been using the facility.”
