Police have arrested a man who allegedly reversed his car into a female officer while fleeing a domestic violence incident in Darwin’s north overnight.

An NT Police spokeswoman said officers responded to reports of the incident in Litchfield Court in Coconut Grove about 2am Friday where a 24-year-old man was allegedly attempting to flee the scene.

The spokeswoman said the man drove backwards with his driver’s side door open, striking the policewoman with it before losing control and was subsequently arrested.

He remains in custody with police expecting to lay charges Friday, while the female alleged victim of the DV assault was treated by paramedics at the scene and the officer was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for assessment.

Territory Duty Superintendent Tanya Mace said it was fortunate no-one was seriously injured during the incident.

“Our officers are on the streets every day, putting their lives at risk, protecting and serving the community,” she said.

“Assaults on anybody, including police members, are completely unacceptable and this individual will face charges for it.”

Sergeant Mace urged anyone experiencing domestic or family violence to contact police on 131 444 or in an emergency, call triple-0.
