THE NT government’s decision to swiftly shut the borders to greater Brisbane yesterday was a sensible one.

The new case of COVID-19 in Brisbane, diagnosed to be the super contagious variant found in the United Kingdom, poses a high risk to the NT because of how transmissible it is.

There are no cases of community transmission in the NT thus far, and we certainly don’t want to flirt with the possibility of a mutant super spreader ravaging our communities.

But if we’re taking such a hard approach to greater Brisbane now, why aren’t we doing the same for people who arrived in the NT from those hot spots since January 2?

‘Not clear’ whether UK strain of COVID-19 is more contagious in of itself

Acting Chief Minister Nicole Manison urged people who travelled from those hot spots since January 2 to self-isolate and get tested for COVID-19, but this is not being enforced.

Ms Manison said people were encouraged to “do the right thing by the Territory and go and get tested, and isolate in the interim”.

She added these travellers weren’t considered as a high risk requiring direction thus far.

Considering the new Brisbane case was diagnosed with the super contagious version of COVID-19, it is questionable whether the threat should be take more seriously.

If such immediate and harsh action was taken for travellers en route to Darwin yesterday, surely it would be wise to do the same for those who came from hot spots since January 2.
