THE Medical Cannabis Users Association of NT has launched a petition, calling on the NT Government to legalise cannabis for both medicinal and recreational adult use.

Legalising cannabis for all adults in the NT is something the Gunner Government should investigate.

If it’s done right, legalising the drug could have some major benefits to the Territory.

It would bring the drug out of the shadows and stop dealers profiting by selling it to vulnerable people.

Legalising cannabis would also help remove some of the stigma around the drug itself — making it easier for people to seek help, if needed.

It would also allow the NT Government to regulate and earn tax on cannabis sales — bringing in a new revenue stream at a difficult financial time for the Territory.

There’s also the potential for tourism — an extra incentive for people to pack their bags and come up to the NT to enjoy the laid-back lifestyle here.

Attracting people to spend money in the NT is always a good thing. There are a lot of positives, but — as with all legal changes — anything worth doing is worth doing right.

We think anything that can help improve the health and wellbeing of Territorians — and earn cash — is a good idea.

Let’s hope the politicians agree, and engage in serious chats with policy makers, business owners and health professionals about if legalising cannabis is the right decision for the Territory.
