Hospitality staff deserve our respect
Hospitality workers play an important part of our lives. They’re there for some of our biggest life celebrations, and the least we can do is show them some respect.

ONE of the groups that have been hit the hardest in the last 18 months have been our hospitality workers.
They’re the ones we go to when we’re celebrating a birthday, having drinks with friends or going out for dinner.
They provide a vital service that we all use every day without a second thought. And yet, they are some of the worst treated groups of workers there are.

Each and every day, hospitality workers have to endure verbal and sometimes physical abuse, ungodly work hours, drunken and belligerent patrons and, of course, customers who are just plain rude.
On top of that, they work in some of the most precarious job situations of anyone.
Many hospo workers are in casual positions, meaning when things go wrong, they can easily have the rug pulled out from under them.
This is exactly what we’ve seen happen during the pandemic – thousands of hospo workers losing their job literally overnight.
And left with no support as their bills continue to pile up.
The story of a young woman being violently attacked while she is just trying to do her job is not good enough.
The story of a woman being spat at when she’s just trying to enforce the rules on the weekend is also reprehensible.
They deserve our gratitude, not our abuse.
