WE’VE always known Territorians are the luckiest people in Australia but new job vacancy figures reveal just how well we’ve done during this unprecedented global pandemic.

The COVID-19 crisis has run roughshod over economies and people’s lives right throughout the nation but with Victoria now seemingly joining the rest of us in getting on top of the virus, Australians are firmly focused on getting back to their normal lives and back to work.

After the loss of thousands of jobs in the Territory when coronavirus first struck, the news that vacancies have surged back up above pre-pandemic levels is music to the ears of those still trying to get back into the workforce.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner ran Labor’s re-election campaign on his government’s handling of COVID-19 and to his credit we remain among the best-placed jurisdictions in the nation to continue to bounce back from oblivion.

The challenge now will be to ensure the government is able to keep the momentum going over the months and years ahead.

With a vaccine expected to be on the cards within the next couple of years, the government will only be able to rest on its coronavirus-busting laurels for so long.

And with another election not due until 2024, the real test of Mr Gunner’s leadership may be yet to come.
