MORE CCTV cameras can only, in theory, be a good thing when trying to prevent crime.

Since 2016, the number of cameras has more than quadrupled from 193 to more than 831.

While it is a staggering increase it means there are more ‘eyes’ out there keeping an watch on our safety and catching those who choose to flout the law.

It is only fair that the livelihoods of Territorians be taken into consideration

In about five years, we have seen a considerable increase in CCTV and police say it is a valuable tool in helping them tackle crime and investigate incidents.

Supporting NT police to do their job is a good thing.

We’ve seen big rollouts of CCTV in the CBD in 2019 and the Karama Plaza in 2020, which has helped police keep an eye on things as well as deter would be criminals.

As A/Superintendent Drew Slape says CCTV cameras are “an efficient, effective detection and investigative tool that has both solved and prevented crime”.

He also said the cameras were integral in helping police tackle anti-social behaviour and associated violence.

With police last week undertaking an operation to target anti-social issues and problem drinking the cameras would have proven handy to direct units on the ground to locations where they are needed.

Hopefully the cameras continue to assist police to do their job and keep us all safe.
