NT Government funds Wadeye Pool reopening

Five years ago, significant damage left Wadeye residents without a pool. Read what it means to have it back.

Five years ago, the Wadeye pool was closed due to significant damage and residents were left without a place to swim.

Last week, however, the pool was reopened after an NT Government-funded $4.5 million refurbishment was completed.

Chief Minister Natasha Fyles joined locals in celebrating the pool’s opening and enjoyed having a splash herself.

“Good community infrastructure, builds strong, healthy communities,” she said.

“The Territory Government has provided $4.5 million to construct the pool at Wadeye – providing fun, recreational activities which keep our young people engaged.”

Member for Daly, Dheran Young said it was great to see the pool up and running.

West Daly Regional Council chief executive Andrew Everingham said the project delivered a “broader” benefit to the community.

“The Wadeye pool is more than just an aquatic facility,” he said.

“It represents a safe place for the entire community to come together.

“Beyond providing a recreational outlet, the refurbishment brings several additional community benefits, including improved health outcomes, enhanced social connection, local employment, training opportunities, and improved water safety.”

The West Daly Regional Council maintained the pool’s reopening “underscores” the Territory Government’s support for regions.

“The Northern Territory Government’s commitment to funding this project underscores its dedication to supporting regional communities and fostering environments that promote health, wellbeing, and community cohesion,” the statement read.

“The Wadeye Local Authority’s contribution further emphasises the collaborative spirit that defines this venture.”
