A free event in Wadeye aimed at promoting the health of the community next month and will feature the return of one the most talked-about local artists this year.

Top End rapper J-MILLA made headlines earlier this year with his groundbreaking performance during Reconciliation Week, when the artist performed in Wadeye and streamed the concert live to hundreds of thousands of viewers online.

It was the first time a performance like this had been live-streamed from a remote community and the second time he had performed in Wadeye to huge praise.

Last year the 25-year-old was credited with helping to quell unrest in Wadeye, when residents of the town were affected by ongoing violence.

This November, J-MILLA and his younger brother Yung Milla will return to Wadeye for what is being branded as a “Music, Sport and Wellbeing Day” to promote “the power of a healthy community”.

The free event will be held on the first weekend of November and will boast free workshops and live music performances.

AFL players Shane McAdam from the Adelaide Crows, Jy Farrar from the Gold Coast Suns and Ash Johnson from Collingwood will be holding a footy clinic for children with the purpose of “setting Wadeye’s sights on championship-level health, skill, fitness sand positivity”.

Other workshops will include a men’s shed sharing circle and a boxing workshop held by rapper Kootsie Don, who will also perform live as part of the evening program.

Wadeye’s Yidiyi Day will be held in Wadeye from November 3 to 4.
