Wentworthville: Firefighters remove baby’s thumb from Christmas decoration

A baby’s parents will have quite the story to tell him about his first Christmas after emergency services were called to help the bub when he got too stuck into the decorations.

A 10-month-old baby boy is already showing signs of loving Christmas but his curiosity meant firefighters were called to remove a metal ball from the child’s thumb at Wentworthville on Thursday.

Eight Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters from Wentworthville and Seven Hills were called to the incident at the Jewelsford Rd home shortly before 9.30am after the inquisitive youngster got his stuck in the red bauble.

Seven Hills Fire Station officer Adam Smith said the child was mostly patiently as firefighters removed the thumb with pliers after a swift 10 minutes.

The baby’s thumb had to be removed from the metal ball.

“He got a little distressed but his mum helped him through the whole thing,’’ he said.

Paramedics were also called to assess the baby, who lost a small amount of blood.

Mr Smith said crews responded to similar incidents with children regularly, “not just this time of the year”.

“We get them year wide — you’d be surprised what children get their hands and their legs stuck in.

“We’re talking fences, we’re talking drains. Children climb, children grab, children poke — it’s been happening since children were invented.’’
