Police probe Lake Macquarie shooting after video shows man firing from moving car

A man has been arrested after footage emerged on social media showing shots being fired from a moving car in Lake Macquarie’s Coal Point.

A man and woman are in police custody following a series of alleged firearm offences including a drive-by-style shooting in Lake Macquarie that was captured on video and posted to social media.

The footage, obtained by 2GB, shows a man firing a shot from the window of a moving car while driving through Coal Point.

After one shot is fired, the man is heard saying, “whoops.”

Police say the video was brought to their attention late on Sunday evening by a member of the public.

It is believed the footage depicts two separate firearm incidents within the previous 24 hours.

An investigation was immediately launched by officers from Port Stephens Police District.

Shortly before 2.35am on Monday, officers conducting covert surveillance spotted a white Mazda CX5 parked on Burley St in Tenambit.

Police allege the man inside the vehicle fired a single gunshot into the air.

The car was then tracked with assistance from PolAir as it travelled to a home on Coal Point Rd in Coal Point.

A perimeter was established around the property by local police with support from the Tactical Operations Unit.

Then just after 5.15am, a 27-year-old man emerged from the home and was arrested without incident.

A short time later, officers entered the residence and arrested a 22-year-old woman in connection with the investigation.

Both were taken to Toronto Police Station, where inquiries are continuing.

No injuries or property damage have been reported.
