A supermarket giant is expanding its already-prominent footprint in a western Sydney suburb where competitors are also capitalising on the market. Find out its plans.

Woolworths plans to open its third supermarket in Parramatta in the Meriton Suites towers at 180 George St.

The supermarket is in discussions with Meriton about store opportunities including Parramatta, and a development application has this month been lodged with the council for signage on the corner of the complex at Charles and George streets.

If it gets the stamp of approval, the Metro at George St will be the third Woolies in the suburb where there is a full-line supermarket and a Metro at Westfield shopping complex.

But the major supermarket does not quite have a monopoly in the huge mall, where discount supermarket Aldi will open in the fresh food section on level five alongside a revamped Coles as part of a $33 million overhaul slated for completion this year.

Outside Westfield, the Metro planned for George St will be the only supermarket in the CBD and will also serve residents living at the Albion and former Cumberland Newspapers sites when they are redeveloped.

Business Western Sydney executive director David Borger welcomed the supermarket.

“I think as Parramatta grows with more high-rise apartments it’s really important we start to develop these urban villages and neighbourhoods where you don’t necessarily have to go to Westfield,’’ he said.

“I think the opportunity is to provide a hub for the eastern part of the Parramatta River, which reaches down to the bottom of Robin Thomas Reserve.’’

When construction wraps up, the Meriton Suites will soar to 180m over 67 storeys and house hotel suites, a gym and a 75-place childcare centre.

The first stage has finished while the second and third phases are slated for completion in October and early 2023.

Woolworths is also constructing its first automated dispatch hub for online products at Auburn, to meet the growing demand for digital shopping.

The Customer Fulfilment Centre will create up to 250 full-time jobs and enable personal shoppers to distribute 50,000 online orders a week when it opens in 2024.

The vast, 22,000sq m centre at Percy St will be double the size of CommBank Stadium.
