Demolition of Albion Hotel Parramatta draws close

The demolition of a popular watering hole - which has stood is the heart of Parramatta for more than century - is looming to make way for a double-tower apartment complex.

The Albion Hotel at Parramatta’s demise is looming after a development application was lodged with Parramatta Council to demolish the pub “and all ancillary structures down to the slab”.

The 139-year-old watering hole at the corner of Harris and George streets, will eventually be demolished to make way for two towers that will house 405 apartments, 36 units for seniors, a cinema, a wine bar, function space, billiard rooms and indoor bowls.

The State Government approved the plans in March when Parramatta Council debated the loss of the popular pub.

Parramatta councillor and now Lord Mayor Donna Davis warned the city would lose one of its most lively venues when the Albion site was redeveloped.

“Now the people that are building this new, fandangled apartment block on this site are saying that they are going to build another pub but we know it’s not going to be the same,’’ she said.

The plans spell the end of another Parramatta landmark pub just two years after the heritage-listed Royal Oak was bulldozed for the controversial Parramatta light rail.

A recent application was submitted recently that would see the end of the pub, including its beer garden.

The development will rise above 135 George St and 118 Harris St, and be built opposite the new light rail stop at Robin Thomas Reserve.

The original Albion Hotel opened in 1882 but it was demolished and rebuilt in 1924. The Solomon family acquired the pub in 1986.

The Albion was contacted for comment.
