A Norco milk truck driver is fighting for life in hospital after colliding with a ute on a major roadway at Nana Glen near Coffs Harbour, with police launching a probe into the crash.
The crash happened at about 8.30am on Friday at Orara Way, Nana Glen, causing a major traffic back-up on the busy thoroughfare between the towns of Coramba and Nana Glen.
NSW Fire and Rescue and SES personnel were on the scene before 9.30am, using the jaws of life in an attempt to cut the trapped driver of the milk truck loose.
The 53-year-old male driver of the truck was treated at the scene before being airlifted to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition, police say.
Two passengers in their teens were taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital for the treatment on injuries believed to be non-life threatening.
The driver of the ute – a 41-year-old man – and his eight-year-old passenger were uninjured.
Both drivers will be subject to mandatory blood and alcohol testing.
A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is underway.
Localised traffic diversions are expected to remain in place for several hours, with motorists urged to avoid Orara Way between Coramba and Nana Glen.
