An Emu Heights family whose driveway collapsed in a dramatic landslide have spoken of the “nightmare” they face as more of their property continues to erode in the wet weather.

Half of Naizal and Rasleen Buksh’s driveway and front yard crumbled away on Monday afternoon after torrential rain in Sydney’s northwest caused a sudden landslide in their cul-de-sac.

Mr and Mrs Buksh and their three children were not home at the time but told Channel 7 they returned to find an incredible crater where their driveway once lay.

“I was at work and my wife was inside the house. This was on Monday at about 2:50pm and she went to pick up the kids from school and when she got back 10 minutes later she drove to the driveway to find half our driveway was missing and that is when it all started,” Mr Buksh said.

Mr Buksh said more of the driveway had fallen away on Tuesday and Wednesday because of the heavy rain.

“(The (erosion) started to increase and overnight, as my wife said, more of the concrete has dropped off and soil eroded away because of the rain … we walked in this morning and saw a bit more of the driveway wash down and let’s hope it stops there,” Mr Buksh said.

“We have been here for eight years. this is the first time that we have seen such a severe level of damage. It is something like out of a movie.”

Mrs Buksh said she ran inside to grab the essentials after coming home to find the crater, and two days later was still overcome with “shock”.

I was just shocked … even now when I look at it does not feel real,” she said.

“It feels like a nightmare and I will wake up and everything will go back to normal.

“I am just praying and hoping that it will not go any further. I just want my home back.”

The Buksh family have had their home assessed by structural engineers, who said it was safe to return, but they will stay away until the ground dries out.

Mr Buksh said: “We have had some inspections by engineers yesterday morning and while they have deemed it safe for the house and for us to move back in, from a personal perspective and risk management perspective I have said no that I will not come back in until it dries up and we have a better assessment of things.

“Overnight more concrete fell away and more soil eroded so we just do not want to take that risk where part of the house collapses.”

He added: “I wish the rain would go away just so we can get back into our home and the kids can have their beds back and yeah, just want to be back home … but there are still chunks of the driveway going.”
