Firefighters are working to extinguish a fierce blaze that gutted a two-storey home in Sydney’s west early this morning, with a mother and her son managing to flee to safety.
The fire broke out just after 7am at a home on Theresa St in Smithfield, with the top floor quickly becoming engulfed in flames.
Six trucks and 24 firefighters responded to the scene, where thick smoke poured from the building and a section of the roof later collapsed.
The mother and her adult son had managed to escape the home before fire crews arrived.
Firefighters were also confronted with a live electrical hazard when a power pole outside the home collapsed, initially energising the scene with a “live” feed of electricity.
Crews have since contained the fire and are working to fully extinguish the flames.
Their efforts successfully prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby homes.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
