Fresh images reveal plans for a dramatic new expansion to hospitals in Sydney’s west, as a much-needed $120 million upgrade is set to increase patient capacity.

The upgrade comes as the government has invested $120 million in upgrades for Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital including fit-for-purpose recovery rooms and expansions to existing service areas.

Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital chief medical adviser Maria Buenaventura said the expansion would be “a fantastic opportunity for the patients and community as well as the hospital and staff”.

“We like to think about care of patients as more than the operations that we do, the procedures that we do, more than the drugs that we give,” she said.

“We like to treat families and patients as a unit.”

The redevelopment comes as part of $1.3 billion in the latest budget for health services in western Sydney.

Dr Buenaventura said the additional 60 beds across both hospitals are larger and “give us the ability to engage more with families”.

“We know in this area patients have bigger families, it gives us the opportunity to have families stay with their loved ones,” she said.

Health Minister Ryan Park said the latest updates on the project were “a major step forward” in increasing inpatient capacity in the region.

“The project will boost access to a range of urgent and elective surgeries by creating space for patient recovery and the support needed before returning home,” he said.

“We’re also increasing inpatient capacity at Mount Druitt Hospital to reduce the need for patient transfers and further free up capacity at other Western Sydney hospitals.”
