A serial offender with more than 50 prior charges broke into a popular East Gosford pub and stole thousands of dollars worth of booze before foolishly texting his partner a pic – asking if she was keen for a drop.

Scott Spiteri was jailed for 18 months in Gosford Local Court on Thursday on charges of stealing motor vehicles, breaking and entering and being in possession of stolen goods.

Spiteri broke into a car wash shop on Victoria St, East Gosford on April 27, last year and stole a number of items, including keys to two cars just before 1am.

According to police facts, Spiteri then made his way to the Elanora Hotel, located on the same street as the car wash.

Spiteri forced his way into the premises and took several photographs on his mobile phone of boxes containing wine and sent a text to his partner – who is not accused of any wrongdoing – asking if she wanted some wine.

After 4am he returned to the car wash and stole both cars.

According to police facts, Spiteri sought assistance from a contact and asked if the cars had a tracker in them.

He then loaded one of the cars with some of the stolen boxes of wine and left the location. Spiteri then returned in the other stolen car and loaded the remaining boxes of wine in the vehicle before leaving the location.

“Spiteri made numerous attempts to on-sell the vehicles for cash – taking and forwarding images of the interior of the vehicles to potential buyers,” according to police facts.

On May 2, last year just before 1pm, police were patrolling White St, East Gosford when they spotted one of the stolen cars with no front registration plate.

Police spoke to Spiteri who appeared to be nervous and searched him.

During the search, police found the key to the parked ford ranger down the front of his pants. Police made further inquiries regarding the vehicle and confirmed it was the stolen ford ranger.

During this time, police observed what appeared to be the stolen blue Honda Civic parked at the bottom of Spiteri’s home.

Spiteri’s lawyer told the court his client wished to turn his life around.

In sentencing Magistrate Elizabeth Ellis said Spiteri had a propensity for drug related offences.

“I hope that in that period of parole you take advantage of rehabilitation. To me that is desperately needed”.
