Drivers have been urged to get familiar with the latest mega-project set to change Sydney’s roads, with the Sydney Gateway opening nearing this coming Sunday.

The 5km motorway road will provide a new link to the Sydney airport, cutting an estimated 17 minutes between the airport and the St Peters Interchange which connects to the M8 and the main routes to western Sydney, the M5 and M4.

The new road is set to be a game-changer for drivers from the city’s west, with a motorist joining the motorway network in Campbelltown, Liverpool, Penrith or Parramatta having just one traffic light to contend with on a run to the international terminal at Sydney airport.

The traffic snarls of the Rozelle Interchange, however, have transport authorities on high alert over the new stretch of road opening, with more than 100 minor alterations made to signage and road markings following testing with drivers.

Roads Minister John Graham urged drivers to be ready for the major changes, including watching animations on Transport NSW’s website simulating a trip on the new road.

“A driver in Western Sydney joins the motorway network and the next set of traffic lights they stop at may well be in Melbourne, Brisbane – this is the real dividend of the toll-free Sydney Gateway,” he said.

“Transport for NSW is working closely with Sydney Airport for the smoothest start, but I urge all Sydney drivers to take a moment to familiarise themselves with the animations, know their route and expect some initial traffic impacts as fellow drivers also get familiarised.”

Transport NSW secretary Josh Murray urged drivers to watch video of the new road before driving it.

“The animations include the signage and road markings that drivers will see in the M8 tunnels and on the new adjoining surface roads, helping them to navigate the new routes to and from the Sydney Airport precinct,” he said.
