A pilot has died after his light plane crashed in southwestern NSW, despite desperate efforts by paramedics to save him.

A man, believed to be in his 50s, has died following a plane crash in southwestern NSW.
Police arrived at D-Block Rd, Balranald, about 350km west of Griffith, after reports of a light plane crash about 2pm Wednesday.
The pilot was treated by paramedics for critical injuries but died at the scene.
Officers from Barrier Police District established a crime scene and an investigation into the cause of the crash will be undertaken by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
