A VIDEO of a woman sitting in the Elizabeth River has left locals astonished that she was not taken by a croc.

In the video the woman casually wades in the water beside a boat ramp, where one of her friends then also dangles his legs in the water.

Hannah Curran, who filmed the video, said she had been a frequent visitor to the Elizabeth River for 15 years and had never seen someone swim in it.

“I wouldn’t even put my big toe in the water,” she said.

Ms Curran said at one point the woman swam out far enough that the water was up to her neck.

“I yelled out, they looked at me but didn’t care, they were in there for a good half-hour,” she said.

Ms Curran said the group continued to ignore her warnings so she decided to call the police for their own safety.

“I filmed it and put it on Facebook to share the message ‘Don’t go swimming in a murky river because it is silly’,” she said.

The group eventually left the river and disappeared into the boat ramp carpark.

“Everyone who walked past me when I was watching said ‘I hope there aren’t crocs in there’,” Ms Curran said.

“She was very lucky that day, that’s for sure.”

There are about 100,000 saltwater crocs in the wild in the NT. More than 230 have been captured in the NT just this year, including 13 from the Darwin management zone in the past week.

Territorians are urged to be CrocWise when around waterways.
