‘Going to end in tragedy’: Footage emerges of wild Alice Springs brawl

Alice Springs community leaders say the crime issues that gripped the town last summer – prompting a visit from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese – are as bad today as they were 12 months ago.

“It’s definitely not better,” said Darren Clark who runs the Action for Alice Facebook page.

“We had a day here a few days ago where 25 houses got broken into. There were eight cars stolen on one night and you’ve got youths brawling in the CBD.”

In a video obtained by Sky News, one man is thrown to the ground before another man appears to jump and stomp on him.

Another man then runs across the road and kicks the man near the head while he is on the ground.

While he is lying motionless, another man appears to kick and stomp on him and throw and object at him.

Mr Clark said young men had formed gangs in Alice Springs and were regularly engaging in serious acts of violence.

“I don’t know how that is allowed to happen in the CBD of a major town … and when they pull out machetes, where does it end?” he said.

Mr Clark took Sky News for a tour through the streets of Alice Springs from 11pm on Tuesday night until 2am on Wednesday morning.

Dozens of young children could be seen walking around the streets unsupervised.

Just before midnight, a child who looked as young as four, could be seen playing inside a turned-over supermarket trolley outside the Alice Springs hospital while a woman sat nearby.

While Sky News was in the CBD, an Alice Springs resident who asked not to be identified for fear of retribution, provided the video of the brawl.

The resident also provided another video – also taken in late November - of six young people hanging out of the windows of a grey hatchback car as it hooned around the streets.

Mr Clark said cars were regularly being stolen and driven dangerously through the CBD.

“It’s going to end in tragedy,” he said.

“People keep shaking their heads that it hasn’t happened yet, but one of those cars is going to plough into an innocent person’s vehicle.

“Something tragic is going to happen and none of us want to see that.”

Warlpiri elder Anthony Egan said children and young people were coming into Alice Springs from surrounding communities because they were bored.

“You know what there’s nothing happening out bush,” he said.

“They’re coming into town and they’re bringing their trouble into town which we don’t like.

“They don’t seem to listen to us. There’s no control over the kids roaming at night. It starts with the parents.”
