Wild weather cancels NYE fireworks in Darwin

The Build Up is about to snap with further thunderstorms and showers forecast for the Top End this weekend.

The forecast comes after Darwin residents experienced showers on Friday morning in which an estimated 30mm of rainfall was recorded – the highest since the Build Up began.

On Friday, the Bureau of Meteorology confirmed the Top End was expected to endure a straight week of possible storms from Saturday.

Ironically, the Bureau recommended Territorians take sun protection precautions over the weekend, with the UV Index predicted to reach an extreme level of 13 in between showers.

Berry Springs missed out on Friday’s downpour but has been forecast to experience showers and possible storms throughout next week also.

NT Parks and Wildlife told NT News that outdoor enthusiasts should monitor its website prior to planning any day adventures.

“The Wet Season has kicked off, which means the seasonal closures have begun,” the statement read.

“To avoid disappointment, make sure you check what’s open before you leave home.”

As of Friday, most sites in Litchfield Park remain open with the exception of the lower section of Cascades in which access needs repairing.
