THE Terrtory will close its borders again to Greater Sydney from midnight, a week after the NT government revoked the area’s hot spot declaration.

Health Minister Natasha Fyles said from 12.01am Friday anyone who travels to the Northern Territory from Greater Sydney will be put into mandatory quarantine.

“We are watching very closely New South Wales and particularly Metropolitan Melbourne,” she said.

“So we will meet again over the weekend as the advice from AHPPC and our state officials comes into our chief health officer, and we won’t hesitate to declare further hotspot regions.

“I urge all Territorians — please strongly reconsider any travel, you may have planned over the coming weeks.

“We have seen an outbreak in Sydney, although we’ve got two specific clusters we’ve got a number of cases, across Metropolitan Sydney and that is why the Northern Territory has declared that area as a hotspot forcing anyone into mandatory quarantine.”

On Christmas Eve the Territory revoked its hot spot declaration for Greater Sydney, after the area was black-listed on December 20.

Yesterday acting Chief Minister Nicole Manison announced NSW suburbs Croydon, Croydon Park, Lilli Pilli, Strathfield, Strathfield North, Strathfield South and Sutherland would be declared COVID-19 hot spots from Thursday 12.01am.

Overnight NSW recorded 10 local cases of COVID-19 and seven international cases.

Five cases were linked to the Avalon cluster and three to the Croydon cluster. One was linked to a transport worker cluster and another under investigation.

Six new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Victoria overnight.

As of 8am Thursday there were 554 people in mandatory quarantine in the NT – four Territorians, 24 interstate residents, 513 from repatriation flights and 13 other international arrivals.

Three men, a 35-year-old, 25-year-old and 36-year-old – who returned a 'low positive’ test – from the Diamantina livestock ship remain in the care of Royal Darwin Hospital staff.
