Wait times of up to eight years for public housing in the Northern Territory
Thousands of people are waiting close to a decade for public housing in the Territory, in statistics made available in Estimates.

PEOPLE are waiting up to eight years to get into public housing, Territory Families Minister Kate Worden revealed in NT Estimates on Tuesday.
Wait times for a one bedroom home ranged between six and eight years in most parts of the Territory.

It would take between six and eight year to get a three-bedroom home in Alice Springs through public housing, although wait times in Palmerston were substantially lower.
Ms Worden said there were 1114 people waiting for public housing in Greater Darwin, 882 people on the waitlist in Alice Springs, 447 in Palmerston, 149 in Tennant Creek and 119 in Nhulunbuy.
The 2021-22 budget allocated $1.76m to public housing upgrades, but Ms Worden said the list of properties to be renovated was “still under planning.”
Due to the pandemic, There were no evictions from public housing in the nine months to March 31.
