THE FIRST images of the proposed State Square art gallery have been released as part of a development application submitted by the government to construct the multimillion-dollar facility.

The application has been lodged with the Development Consent Authority and will be open for review and comment from Friday June 25 until early July this year.

Local architectural company, Ashford Group, has the prestigious job of designing the new gallery, which is one of the centrepieces of the long-awaited precinct redevelopment.

The government will shortly release a tender for early contractor involvement to construct the art gallery and other parts of the State Sqaure overhaul, with construction scheduled to commence later this year.

Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Eva Lawler said this was another achievement that was helping to maintain the momentum of the major redevelopment project.

“We already see a difference in the liveliness and openness of Darwin city with the grass being laid on the Chan building site almost complete and the underground carpark in full use,” she said.“Redeveloping Civic and State Square will provide more opportunities for local businesses to be involved and create local jobs in our community, while also creating a pipeline of work throughout the design, consultancy and construction stage.”

The art gallery will be located on the former Juror’s carpark adjacent to the Supreme Court on Smith Street, and is expected to be completed in late-2023.

It forms part of the 10-year Darwin city revitalisation plan, signed between the federal government, the Territory government and the City of Darwin.

The progression of the art gallery is complemented by the demolition and greening of the former Chan building, with the contractor set to complete grassing and minor landscaping of the area this week.
