‘The airfares can get them over the line’: Fyles backs feds $1.2b plan

NT Tourism Minister Natasha Fyles has put politics aside and thrown her support behind the Morrison government’s airfare initiative aimed at supporting remote region tourism industries.
Ms Fyles said the $1.2bn stimulus package would help overcome the cost factor that deters many tourists from coming to the Territory.
Her comments come in the wake of Federal Labor Leader Anthony Albanese claiming the federal incentive package contained nothing for tourism operators and was just a subsidy for airlines.

“It is a long way and it can be expensive so if we can get these reduced flights then that will help our operators,” Ms Fyles said.
“For the Territory we know there is the flights hurdle of getting people here … for us those flights are a real incentive because if people can get to the Territory easier they will come.
“We know the Northern Territory is a bucket list destination.
“We know they want to go to Uluru, to Kakadu and the Top End.
“The airfares can get them over the line.”
Ms Fyles said she has a very productive relationship with federal Tourism Minister Dan Tehan and is continuing to work with the commonwealth government around what destinations people will be travelling from to get to the Territory.

“I will continue to work with the commonwealth to see that we get as many destination as possible coming in to the Territory. Every tourist counts.”
Under the $1.2bn package plane tickets to some holiday destinations will be half price from April.
