School holiday programs are underway in the Northern Territory – with one in the Red Centre proving a hit – but “challenges” with service providers mean two remote communities are missing out.
Speaking in Alice Springs on Thursday, Minister for Youth, Seniors, and Equality Jinson Charls said up to 750 people were taking advantage of free entry to the Alice Springs Aquatic Centre.
“Free access to the aquatic centre in Alice Springs is a perfect example of how we are empowering young people to make the most of the summer,” he said.
But youths in two remote communities – which Mr Charls did not name – won’t have access to any programs due to “limited providers which is giving challenges”.
“It’s mainly around I think the service delivery there and especially when it comes to this time of the year,” he said.
“So the people from outside the community who are working in the community tend to go away on holiday, so that’s another challenge.
“We are working with the different providers in different regions to make sure that they can provide meaningful activities in those regions.”
In Alice Springs, Mr Charls visited a drone workshop, one of the more than 650 activities available this school holiday period.
Six kids had turned up to learn the ins-and-outs of drones, with Eli Hoolihan giving Mr Charls a rundown on how they work.
“It’s fantastic to see young people getting hands-on experience with technology like drones,” Mr Charls said.
Other activities taking place included a decorate a barra workshop in Katherine – which drew 25 kids – while in East Arnhem, an all-ages fishing trip is set to depart on Friday.
