THE Gunner government is facing a big test with Territory businesses being urged to pass judgment on its progress in the Chamber of Commerce NT’s first Business Confidence Survey since last year’s NT election.
Business confidence languished for most of the NT government’s previous term of government.
The key factor identified throughout the term by business as most affecting the economy was government policy, followed by economic climate and population decline.

COVID has kept the Territory’s population stable and a host of economic stimulus packages in construction, hospitality and tourism over the past year have helped keep the Territory economy going.
“The Chamber of Commerce long-running Business Confidence Survey is now open, and we absolutely want to hear from you.,” Chamber chief executive officer Greg Ireland has told members.
“The revamped survey is focused on future workforce challenges, revenue expectations, understanding your feel for the future, business ‘financial fitness’, how Job Keeper has impacted the NT, and business support and development frameworks.”
Mr Ireland said the 2021 Business Confidence Survey will allow both the Chamber of Commerce NT and NT government to assess where support for business is most needed in a post-COVID world.
“The feedback from the survey will empower the chamber to advocate for our members and the wider business community,” he said.

“It will enable us to challenge and question future decisions and support our role in driving economic development across the Territory. Having a membership base of more than 1100 business through all regions allows the chamber to be the voice of Territory business.
“Information gathered will also assist with the chamber’s voice in the implementation and outcomes resulting from the Territory Economic Reconstruction Committee plan, released last November.”
The chamber has members throughout the NT, city-based, regional and remote, all serviced by offices in Darwin, Katherine, and Alice Springs.
The survey will close on April 30 at 3pm.
