A NORTHERN Territory company has been awarded a $2.3m contract to construct a new Aboriginal art gallery in the Top End.

NJ Homes will be responsible for building the new gallery at Mimi Aboriginal Art and Craft in Katherine, after being granted the construction tender by the NT government.

The new facility will include a gallery, retail space, storage areas and upgraded artist studios, based on a design by NT architecture firm Troppo Architects.

Construction is due to begin this month and is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

Mimi Aboriginal Art and Craft executive officer Michael Miller said the Mimi Ngarrdalingi Aboriginal Corporation Board, staff and member artists were excited about the upcoming construction of their new gallery.

“This new building is very special and will enable us to confidently and proudly celebrate, share and promote the Aboriginal art and culture of the Katherine region with lasting benefits for the community,” he said.

The new Mimi Aboriginal Art and Craft gallery is part of the NT government’s $30m Arts Trail Gallery Extension Program, which involves projects in Tennant Creek and Arnhem Land as well as Katherine.

Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Chansey Paech said the program was about showcasing the NT’s rich arts and cultural heritage.

“By investing in our arts and cultural assets through the Arts Trail Gallery Extension Program we are demonstrating the importance of this industry to the Territory,” he said.

“The calibre of our arts centres means we are able to hold our own on the national and international stage and it sends a strong message that our art is highly valued by the Territory Labor Government.”
