NT Police seek dash-cam footage to catch thieves who stole safe from business

NT Police are calling for information from the public after a cash safe was stolen from a business by unknown offenders.

NT Police are calling for information from the public after a safe was stolen from a business in Alice Springs.

Police say sometime between 4.30pm on Friday, May 13 and 7.30am on Monday May 16, unknown offenders broke into a business on the Santa Teresa Rd, and stole a grey cash safe.

Officers have urged for anyone who may have information in relation to the theft, to report it to police.

Constable Jason Wilson said police were calling for motorists with dash-cam footage from the area of Santa Teresa Rd from Friday afternoon to Monday morning, to contact police.

“The business is located in the rural area, which limits the information available. However we are positive there would be a motorist who would have inadvertently captured something on their dashcam which would assist us with our investigations into this incident,” he said.

Anyone with information which would assist with investigations is urged to contact police on 131 44 or report it anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and reference PROMIS number 10008898.

Alleged chopper thief comes a cropper

UPDATE 7.30AM WED MAY 18: A 50-year-old man who allegedly flew off with his own chopper has had his wings clipped following a police arrest.

NT Police alleged the man stole a Robinson Helicopter R22 from an airfield in Weddell in June 2021.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Lawson said the man paid a deposit for the chopper, but allegedly failed to return the aircraft.

Sgt Lawson accused him of refusing to pay the outstanding amount on the helicopter.

Police alleged the aircraft was at the man’s Bradshaw property for nearly a year, approximately 300km south of Weddell.

NT Police investigated the property on Tuesday and seized a helicopter.

Following the year-long investigation, Sgt Lawson thanked Livestock Biosecurity and members of the public for their assistance.

“(They) provided vital information in regards to the location of the helicopter,” he said.

A man was arrested and charged with stealing.

He was later bailed to appear in Katherine Local Court on Monday May 23.

Two people charged for assaulting police

UPDATE, MON 2PM: Two people have been arrested and charged for assaulting police in Alice Springs over the weekend on two separate incidents.

An intoxicated man was refused service to purchase alcohol from an East Side supermarket when he allegedly spat on a police officer on Saturday night.

The 23-year-old refused to follow police directions to leave the area and behaved aggressively towards police.

A man was charged with one count of assault police.

Meanwhile, police were assault by a 27-year-old male at a Larapinta residence.

The man was found sleeping on a trampoline by police on Sunday.

When approached the man attempted to flee the scene which resulted in a physical struggle with officers.

The man allegedly threw a jerry can and charged at an officer and then punched another officer in the head while police were attempting to arrest him.

The man was taken to the Alice Springs Watch house.

A man was charged with one count each of assault police, fail to furnish name and address and assault.

Acting Superintendent Rob Engels said violence towards police is unacceptable.

“This is disgraceful targeted violence directed towards our people and it will not be tolerated,” he said.

“Our job is to keep the community safe, we are not there to be punching bags for the community.”

Two missing children found

UPDATE FRIDAY 4pm: BOTH a 13-year-old girl and an 11-month-old boy have been found after being reported missing earlier on Friday.

13-year-old Tahlia Boye was located around lunchtime and police are no longer concerned for her welfare.

11-month-old Kailen Isaac was located in the Darwin area in the afternoon, however, police are continuing to investigate this matter.

FRIDAY 12pm: NT police are urgently seeking assistance locating an 11-month-old boy Kailen Isaac in the Darwin area.

Kailen’s family is from Borroloola but are currently in the Darwin/Palmerston area with no fixed address.

“It is possible that Kailen is in the company of one or both of his parents, Kassarah Hogan and Lindsay Isaac,” Watch Commander Neil Mellon said.

“Police hold serious concerns for the boy’s safety and urge anyone who knows of his whereabouts or sights the family, do not approach them but call police immediately on 131 444 immediately. Please quote reference P22119637.”

Meanwhile, police are also seeking assistance in locating 13-year-old Tahlia Boye who went missing from her home in Katherine on Thursday night.

Tahlia was last sighed near 7pm when she went outside to turn off a sprinkler at her home in Katherine East.

Her family told notified police shortly after with searches overnight failing to locate her.

Tahlia is reported to have a fair complexion, shoulder length blonde hair, blue eyes and a slim build.

She was last seen wearing a blue rugby shirt and black shorts and may be travelling on her mountain bike, which is also missing.

“Tahlia has a known medical condition and requires medication,” Mr Mellon said.

“Anyone who knows of her whereabouts is asked to contact police on 131 444.”

Alleged bungled burglary leaves axe-wielding man trapped

UPDATE 4PM TUES MAY 10: AN ALLEGED bungled burglary left an axe-wielding man trapped in a showdown with police in a Palmerston pub.

Northern Watch Commander Robert Overall said officers, including dog squad members, raced to the Good Times Bar and Grill on University Ave after Police CCTV spotted four men breaking in at 2.40am.

Mr Overall alleged police arrived to find only one 20-year-old still inside, with his alleged co-offenders fleeing the scene.

Police will allege the young man brandished a tomahawk axe used to break into the business.

Mr Overall said the 20-year-old surrendered his weapon after police pulled out their tasers.

He said the group was not able to steal anything from the Palmerston pub, but alleged the 20-year-old was also involved in a break-in at the Charles Darwin University, Palmerston Campus earlier that night.

Mr Overall said the investigation to identify the man’s three alleged co-offenders was ongoing.

Good Times Bar and Grill venue manager Carlie Duval said this was not their first break-in for the year.

Ms Duval said she arrived in the morning to find the signs of the young man’s attempted escape clearly carved into her security chains.

“The padlock appeared to be sawn off in his attempt to get out,” she said.

Ms Duval said the group took advantage of a security blind-spot, prying open security shutters away from CCTV cameras.

“They came through a gap in our cameras, a gap we didn’t think anyone would fit through,” she said.

But she said once inside the alleged burglars faced a new challenge.

“He slid into our al fresco dining room and then couldn’t get out of it,” she said.

Ms Duval said she was thankful, but puzzled that the trapped man did not try smashing the windows to escape before police arrived.

“For once the police CCTV caught vision of something. They’re usually not pointed in our direction,” she said.

The experienced restaurateur said this was the second incident in just four months, with their “worst” break-in on February 22.

She said where burglars smashed in, ripped out corrugated iron bars and cleared the bar of all the booze.

INITIAL 8AM TUES MAY 10: POLICE were allegedly confronted by an axe-wielding man breaking into a Palmerston Bar.

Northern Watch Commander Robert Overall said a 20-year-old man was arrested at the Good Times Bar and Grill on University Ave.

Police CCTV allegedly picked up the man, and three others, breaking into the business at 2.40am.

Mr Overall said officers, including members of the dog squad, raced to the bar.

Mr Overall said the young man surrendered his weapon after a tense stand off with police who pulled out their Tasers.

He was arrested, but his three alleged co-offenders ran away before police arrived.

It comes as Alice Springs police investigate a break-in at the Victims of Crime office on Leichhardt Terrace.

Southern Watch Commander Rob Kent said the office, which counsels and assists those impacted by crime, was broken into over the weekend.

Mr Kent said unknown offenders rummaged through the office and stole a mobile.

Teen hands herself in following ram raids at servo, car dealership

3PM MAY 9: AN 18-YEAR-OLD has handed herself into police following ram raids of two businesses in Alice Springs.

On Sunday, police were notified around 11.30pm of two vehicles allegedly driving dangerously through the Alice Springs CBD.

At 12.30am one of the vehicles, a white Mitsubishi Challenger which was allegedly stolen earlier, was used to ram raid Jetcor Yamaha and Honda along the Stuart Hwy.

Fifteen minutes later, police were called to a second ram raid where the same car was allegedly used to damage the entrance of service station Liberty Indervon in Sadadeen.

Before 2am, police CCTV operators spotted the alleged offenders dumping the car on Bath St, opposite Kmart.

Police arrested two boys aged 14. At the same time, the 18-year-old woman went to the Alice Springs Police Station and admitted to the alleged driving offences.

The 14-year-olds will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.

The woman was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, damage to property x 2, unlawful entry x 2 and recruiting child to engage in criminal activity.

Investigations continue, with anyone with information urged to call police on 131 444.
