Police arrest 21-year-old following alleged break-in and assault in Nightcliff

AFTER weeks of investigating, a 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged for allegedly breaking into a Nightcliff home and assaulting a man.
On March 27, a Nightcliff resident confronted the 21-year-old alleged intruder in his home which led to an altercation.
The young man left the property by diving through a louvered window, leaving behind an edged weapon and some DNA samples on the broken glass.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brett Cottier said there was an extensive amount of Detective work which led to the arrest.
“Forensic testing and a good deal of Detective work led to this unknown offender being identified and arrested this week,” S/Sgt Cottier said.
“General duties officers, forensics and detectives worked together to identify and arrest a previously unknown violent offender who entered an unsuspecting victim’s house.
“Whatever it takes, we will catch them.”
The 21-year-old has been charged with aggravated unlawful entry and aggravated assault
Bail is yet to be determined.
Alleged booze thief arrested
NT Police have charged a woman after she allegedly stole a quantity of alcohol from a licensed premises in Palmerston on Sunday.
Around 4.30pm, a 21-year-old woman entered the location on University Ave and allegedly stole a quantity of alcohol before assaulting an employee and fleeing the scene.
Detectives from Serious Crime arrested the woman on Tuesday.
Further investigations identified her in an unlawful entry at 3.30am the same day at another licensed venue on Trower Rd in Casuarina.
The 21-year-old has been charged with aggravated robbery, criminal damage, unlawful entry and stealing.
She was bailed to appear in Darwin Local Court on May 26.
“Investigations into these incidents are ongoing and were nothing but acts of senseless violence,” Detective Senior Sergeant Brett Cottier said.
Three arrested after man allegedly assaulted at takeaway shop
THREE people have been charged after a man was allegedly assaulted at a Darwin takeaway shop at the weekend.
NT Police said detectives from the Serious Crime Squad arrested an 18-year-old in Darwin. He was charged with aggravated robbery and bailed to appear in Darwin Local Court on May 26.
A second 18-year-old handed himself in to Wurrumiyanga Police Station on Monday, May 16. He was charged with aggravated robbery and bailed to appear in Wurrumiyanga Local Court on May 18.
A 16-year-old also handed himself into Palmerston Police Station on May 17. He was charged with aggravated robbery and bailed to appear in Darwin Local Court on May 23.
Man allegedly punched at takeaway shop
A MAN was punched in the face and allegedly assaulted with an “unknown edged weapon” at a takeaway shop in Darwin CBD on Saturday.
NT Police say on May 14 around 5.20am, a 20-year-old man went to the takeaway shop along Mitchell St when he was approached by a man parked nearby in a blue Toyota Camry.
They spoke before the second man allegedly punched the 20-year-old in the face. The victim went into an arcade at the rear of the complex when he was chased by the man and two others.
The 20-year-old was knocked to the ground and allegedly assaulted with an “unknown edged weapon”. His watch and baseball cap were taken during the incident.
The 20-year-old has minor wounds and was given First Aid by two bystanders.
The trio left in the Toyota Camry. Police describe the men as:
An Aboriginal male, mid 20s, solid build, wearing a black T-shirt with a white motif and black shorts;
An Aboriginal male, mid 20s, slim build, wearing a West Coast Eagles t‑shirt, dark shorts, black cap and curly hair, and;
An Aboriginal male, mid 20s, solid build, wearing a red hooded jumper, black and white patterned shorts, curly collar-length black hair.
Senior Constable First Class Jennifer Sharma urged anyone with information to call police on 131 444, quoting reference 10007374.
“In particular we’d like to speak with the two men who assisted the victim and offered First Aid,” she said.
Fire in Darwin CBD
A “mechanical malfunction” has been confirmed as the cause of the plumes of smoke which billowed from a Darwin CBD unit complex on Tuesday afternoon.
A spokesman for NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services said NT Fire and Rescue attended the premises on Daly St at about 4.40pm on Tuesday.
“That was the result of a mechanical malfunction – (the) issue was resolved in about 40-mins,” he said.
EARLIER, 5PM TUES MAY 10: EMERGENCY services are responding to a fire at a unit complex on Daly St in the Darwin CBD.
The Police, Fire and Emergency Services incident map shows the fire was first reported shortly before 4.40pm on Tuesday.
Firefighters remain on scene.
NT Police investigate McMillans road, Lee Point Rd crash
SIX female youths are being investigated following a single-vehicle crash in Marrara overnight.
Police are investigating after the stolen vehicle crashed at the intersection of Lee Point Road and McMillans Road.
The youths, aged between 10 and 15, were not seriously injured and have been discharged from hospital
Police said they observed the vehicle driving erratically and commenced a pursuit before it crashed after failing to negotiate a turn.
A 15-year-old female is expected to be summonsed for aggravated unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
“It’s incredibly lucky no one was seriously injured or killed.”
EARLIER 9AM MON: POLICE have reopened a major Darwin intersection following an early morning crash.
Investigators closed off all lanes of McMillans road at the Lee Point Road and McMillans Road intersection following a single-vehicle crash at 2am, Monday.
Northern Watch Commander Robert Overall said police, fire and ambulance services were called to the intersection.
Mr Overall said the police investigation into the crash meant the roads were closed in both directions.
St John NT operations manager Craig Garraway confirmed a car collided with a tree, causing minor injuries to the occupants.
Police are expected to provide further comment later today.
INITIAL 7.30AM MON: A CAR crash has blocked all lanes of McMillans road at the Lee Point Road and McMillans Road intersection.
Police and traffic controllers are redirecting traffic to take alternative routes.
McMillans road inbound and outbound lanes have been closed.
It is expected that the road closure will be place throughout the morning
St John NT operations manager Craig Garraway said the car collided with a tree on McMillans Rd about 2am Monday.
“We only had some minor injuries as a result of that crash. No serious injuries as a result of that,” Mr Garraway said.
“So I’m not sure why the police blocked the road there.”
Police request road users to obey all traffic directions and avoid the area.
