THE telltale signs of the dry season have arrived in the Top End, but the cool and crisp weather that comes with it has not according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Despite chances for very isolated rainfall across parts of the Territory’s coast over the coming week, the likelihood of Darwin seeing showers of significance any time soon are “slight at best”, according to senior forecaster Moses Raico.

“Showers and storms are remaining isolated to very isolated across the Top End,” he said.

“During the day, we’ve seen a fall in humidity and drier conditions in parts of the Top End during the afternoon.

“With that we have clearer skies and temperatures staying above average over inland parts of the Top End.”

Mr Raico said the evening humidity was expected to linger as the Top End steadily transitions to a May start for the dry.

“In terms of being the actual dry season per se, around the Darwin area it’s not looking like the classic dry season we’d expect,” he said.

“It is kind of a transition period, but you get a sense that it is moving into the dry season.”

For Red Centre residents, temperatures are warm in the high 30s, about 10 degrees above average.

However, some cloud cover could offer reprieve from the heat until the heat returns on Thursday, according to Mr Raico.

“They’ve had a trough that moved through, and we’ve actually saw ahead of that the north westerlies or northerlies has helped to see those temperatures see well above average,” he said.

“But we are seeing a reduction in those temperatures, a bit of cloud as well over southern parts of the NT.

“Still above average, but down on what we saw.”
