ABOUT 10,000 NT jobs have been lost since the start of the coronavirus crisis, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The ABS has reported — based on payroll data from the Australian Taxation Office — that there was a 4.8 per cent decrease of Territory jobs between March 14 and April 4.

The NT Government’s former economic policy boss Ian Satchwell said the 4.8 per cent fall equates to 9600 jobs lost.

“The ABS also says the Territory’s wages payments fell 17.6 per cent in three weeks from March 14 and April 4, meaning we’ve lost $33.3 million in personal wage incomes a week,” he said.

“That’s a lot to take out of the consumer economy and to not pay off mortgages!”

Working off ABS job data, Mr Satchwell said he has calculated the job losses across different sectors in the NT between March 14 and April 4 which includes:

– Mining (including oil and gas) -23.9 per cent or 1430 jobs

– Construction -2.8 per cent or 450 jobs

– Wholesale trade -6.1 per cent or 240 jobs

– Accommodation and food services -16 per cent or 2240 jobs

– Transport, postal and warehousing -5.9 per cent or 470 jobs

– Professional, scientific and technical services -7.7 per cent or 770 jobs

– Administrative and support services -8.9 per cent or 890 jobs

– Arts and recreation services -19.4 per cent or 780 jobs

He said these sectors account for losses of 7270 jobs or 76 per cent of the NT’s total job losses to April 4.
