Mary Kenny followed an Australian-born man halfway across the world to be with him in Darwin 32 years ago.
Still living in the Top End to this day, the Irish woman with an infectiously positive outlook made a bold claim while standing at the Shenannigans bar on St Patrick’s Day.
She says the people in Darwin are “more Irish than the Irish”.
Walking into the popular Darwin Irish pub, affectionately known as Shags, on Friday afternoon that could be proven true as green swathes of people, Irish or not, all took part in the fun.
“It doesn’t matter where you come from on St Paddy’s Day we’re all one,” Ms Kenny said.
Bridie Maguire, who was also born in Ireland, met Ms Kenny while Irish dancing in Darwin decades ago and they’ve been friends ever since.
Ms Maguire said the Irish day of celebration was an inclusive event.
“Everybody wants to be a wee bit Irish on St Paddy’s Day and that’s wonderful,” she said.
“We’re all a part of the same world, that’s my thing in life, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you are.”
Hundreds of St Paddy’s Day attendees donned in their finest shades of green traversed through the doors of Shags on Friday afternoon.

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO ON ST PADDY’S DAY
Owen Barker will spend his 26th birthday pulling beers but he doesn’t mind because it’s one of the best days of the year – St. Patrick’s Day.
Traditional Irish celebrations will be happening all weekend at Shags with a traditional breakfast, live music until late, Irish dancing and food and drink specials.
Mr Barker, who is from northern England, has been living in Australia for seven years and been in Darwin the whole time.
“I love the people who have kept me around a lot longer than I thought it would,” he said.
“It will be my first St Patty’s Day here at Shags and it’s going to be brilliant from start to finish, we’re all looking forward to having a good night and serving everyone who comes in.”
Mr Barker said Shags was a place where you could walk in lonely and leave with a bunch of new mates.
“Shenannigans is a great place to meet people, come down have a beer and there’s literally always someone here you can talk to, you can even have some banter with the staff as well,” he said.
“Everyone who comes through is the nicest people you’d ever meet.”
Friday is about all things Irish so be seen in green.
