Labor’s candidate vying for the seat of Goyder has been revealed as environmental scientist and small business owner Sandy Griffin.
Ms Griffin hails from the rural area, having lived in Virginia and Marrakai and grew up in Tennant Creek.
The seat of Goyder encompasses Bees Creek, Humpty Doo, Marrakai and Mount Bundey and is currently held by independent Kezia Purick who is set to step aside this year.
The CLP have put forth Litchfield councillor Andrew Mackay to also contend the seat in August.
Ms Griffin has worked in environmental science for 30 years, growing and running her own consultancy business and comes from a family of pastoralists and miners.
She said her long history in the NT will be a driving factor in her campaign.
“I understand the Territory. I grew up in Tennant Creek, and have called the rural area home for more than 20 years,” she said.
“There’s no where in the world like the rural area of Darwin and I will work every day to ensure it gets it’s fair share.”
As well as her work on environmental projects that aimed to protect the Territory’s landscape, Ms Griffin is also a volunteer firefighter.
Chief Minister Eva Lawler said Labor’s latest candidate was “a true hardworking Territorian”.
“Sandy will fight hard every day to deliver for the rural area of Darwin and ensure that its unique way of life is protected,” she said.
“Sandy is also focused on getting the Territory working through practical and common sense
solutions.”
