Thousands of Top End residents descended on the Darwin Waterfront on Saturday for the 2025 Darwin Italian Festival and an array of Italian cuisine, music and culture.
Crowds milled around the various food vendors and shops, indulging in a wide range of pastas, pizza, cannoli, meatballs and coffee.
From midday, Italian music acts from across the country took to the main stage.
Opening the music was Italian Tenor Lorenzo Iannotti, who performed classics such as “Sway” and “That’s Amore” to an enthusiastic crowd on the dancefloor.
Italian Australian Soprano Rebecca Gulinello brought the house down with some Italian opera classics.
Frank Miranda, better known as Mr Accordion Man, made his way around the event entertaining the crowds ahead of his show later in the afternoon.
Mr Miranda, who appears at festivals across the country said this was his second appearance at a Top End Italian Festival.
“It’s a good one,” he said.
Artworks by local Italians were also on display.
One entitled “Accrocco” meaning “dodgy job” was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s flying bicycle drawings, depicting a flying bicycle unable to get off the ground because of two large pieces of meat attached to the wings.
Creator Bob Mariotti said the “paradoxical” display expressed man’s two “unfulfilled dreams”, to fly and to lose weight successfully.
A sign next to Accrocco read, “For Italians, the effort to lose weight is even more difficult because food is not just a source of calories, but has been elevated to a form of art”.
