POLICE do not believe the death of a man — whose body was discovered washed up on Casuarina Beach on Thursday morning — is suspicious.

Police said the body had been found on the beach outside the Darwin Surf Club just below the high tide mark.

Major Crime Squad Detective A/Senior Sergeant Sonia Kennon said the death did not appear to be suspicious at this stage.

“The man’s identity and the circumstances leading to his death are still being investigated,” she said.

“We are continuing to call for witnesses to come forward.”

The beach, a popular dog walking spot, was reopened to the public just before 3pm.

The body found was that of an Aboriginal man, aged 33.

Sen Sgt Kennon said police believe the body had been there “only recently” and had been discovered by a person walking their dog this morning.

She said there was no indication of how the man died “at this stage”.

The forensics team from the crime scene unit and a forensic pathologist have been on the scene this morning.

Sen Sgt Kennon said the beach will remain closed to maintain the crime scene and it was unknown when it would be reopened.

Police drones have also been flown above the scene to “take an overview of the crime scene”.
