A FRENCH warship, the Frigate Vendémiaire has slipped quietly into Darwin.

An Australian Defence spokesman said the warship is in Darwin for a logistics visit and will depart on Friday.

The spokesman said the Frigate, which is home ported in New Caledonia, has been at sea for more than 14 days and all crew had to have a COVID-19 clearance before sailing.

“Despite that all crew will be COVID tested again in Darwin,” the spokesman said.

“Once all crew are shown to be clear they will be allowed ashore.”

The ship was constructed at Saint-Nazaire, France in 1992 and entered service in 1993. Vendémiaire is stationed in the French Pacific territories for patrol duties.

The frigate is equipped with a 30-by-15-metre helicopter landing pad located on the stern and a 10-by-15-metre hangar.

The ship has a complement of 90 including the aircrew and officers and 24 marines

The Vendémiaire has previously joined naval units from the Royal Australian Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force for naval exercises off the coast of Australia.
