Update, Aug 26: NT Police assistant commissioner Matt Hollomby said preliminary investigations into a horror highway crash indicated a four-wheel drive had drifted in front of a truck.

He said the truck driver tested negative for drugs and alcohol and was cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

With the Territory’s toll currently at 44, compared to just nine this time last year, Assistant Commissioner Hollomby said the main crash victims were middle-aged men in four wheel drives.

“There are some misnomers about who’s driving on our roads,” he said.

Speaking broadly, he said middle-aged men in Litchfield Shire under the influence of alcohol driving four wheels drives were the most common single cause of crashes in the Northern Territroy.

“Alcohol plays a significant factor as well so please just take care on our roads,” he said.

“The old days of having eight or 10 beers at the pub and driving home are gone. Please take care on the roads.”
