NT police rescue trio in broken down boat with no safety gear on board

THREE men have had to be rescued after their boat broke down at sea, and it turned out that they had no safety gear such as life jackets, flares, EPIRB, oars, lights, or any emergency phone Apps to help locate them

THREE men from Alyangula have been rescued after their boat broke down and they had no means of making it back to shore.

Police were called by the trio at 9.14pm Sunday to say their boat had broken down, could still see the Groote Eylandt community but had no oars to help them back to shore.

Northern Watch Commander Bruce Payne said police launched a boat and began searching for the group.

He said without any safety gear or phone Apps that would share the co-ordinates of the boat, police were forced to use their radar to find them.

“The three adult men and their boat were assisted back to Alyangula,” he said.

The group was located safe and well 1.5 kilometres off Connexion Island sometime after 10pm.

He said the boat did not have any safety gear such as life jackets, flares, EPIRB or lights.

Cdr Payne said the man in charge of the boat, a 32-year-old would be spoken to in relation to marine offences.

Senior Sergeant Tanya Woodcock urged people make sure their boat was equipped with the relevant safety gear.

“We would like to remind people to ensure they have the required safety gear on their vessels including, food, water, flares, life vests, GPS and a registered EPIRB,” she said.

“It was lucky that the trio was in mobile phone range or the outcome could have been much worse.”
