NT Health launches ‘April falls month’ over concerning data, showing 1-in-3 Aussies will experience a fall a year
A Darwin woman received two fractured bones and bruising after several falls, and she’s far from alone, prompting an NT Health campaign to promote prevention methods.

The 73-year-old Darwin woman, who suffered from three falls since late last year, was hospitalised at one point with a fractured hip, fractured leg and bruising.

“The (Palmerston Hospital Geriatric Evaluation Management) Unit have been so helpful, encouraging me to exercise and helping me learn a set of exercises I can do,” Ms Howard said about her recovery.
She’s far from alone though, with one in three Australians over the age of 65 experiencing a fall each year.
The staggering statistic has prompted NT Health to launch a new campaign for “April Falls Month”.
Palmerston Hospital physiotherapist Bridgette Springall said keeping active, wearing good footwear and checking your home for trip hazards were important steps to take to minimise risk.

“Falls can occur at any time and at any age, but older populations are more vulnerable,” Ms Springall said.
“Falls are actually a common reason for an older person to be admitted to hospital or move to supported accommodation,” she said.
