A WATER buffalo wading through a river senses it’s not alone.
Three pairs of eyes hone in on the buff, salivating at the thought of sinking its teeth into the mammal’s rump.
But the buff has no intention of becoming lunch.
The buffalo takes the situation by the horns and charges one of the most dangerous reptiles in the world.
It’s a spectacle that could only be caught in the Territory and sure enough, it was.
Footage sent to the NT News shows a water buffalo minding its own business, swimming along a bank in Kakadu.
To the right of the shot, a crocodile is seen floating from a distance.
The buff begins to climb the bank when it charges head first into the water, a crocodile’s head whipping up before diving into the river.
The brave buffalo eyes the croc in the distance, before the video reveals two reptiles lingering ahead of the mammal.
The buff paddles along the bank, closing in on the closest croc.
The buff brings the beef to the reptile, charging at its tail and making the croc swim for dear life. The buffalo, tired of their nonsense, takes aim at the second lingering croc.
The incredible footage was captured by fisho Charlie, who visited the Top End from northern New South Wales.
Charlie was barramundi fishing with mates when the spectacle unfolded.
“The buffalo came down the bank,” he said.
“We looked across and there was a croc coming across the river, then two coming from the other direction.
“As they came toward it, the buffalo charged the two closer crocs. Then the crocs disappeared.”
Charlie said despite the inconvenience, the buffalo continued on its merry way.
“The buffalo went all the way down the river,” he said.
“We were just shocked by how amazing it was. We were waiting for the crocs to latch onto its hindquarters.”
Charlie admitted he and his mates had never seen such a display.
He also hoped one day to return to the Top End for the fishing and the nature.
“It was a good little show,” he said.
“Everyone’s pretty shocked when they see the video. It’s a real nature show.
“The scenery (at Kakadu) is incredible. Just untapped nature and incredible fishing.”
