Large croc spotted at Casuarina Beach

A large saltwater crocodile has been spotted swimming at a popular Darwin beach.

A 2m croc has been spotted swimming in the shallows of Casuarina Beach.

In a post to to the NT Field Naturalists’ Club Facebook page, Jill Huck posted photos of the saltie surfing the waves just before 9am.

Rangers were called to the beach, near the Dripstone Cliffs, but with the tide going out, they were unable to capture the reptile.

However, as of 11.30am Friday, they are continuing to monitor the situation, with traps also being regularly checked in Rapid Creek.

A Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman said while the 2m saltie wasn’t large, it was big enough to take a dog.

She urged Territorians to always be CrocWise, to not swim in the ocean or enter waterways like Rapid Creek to fish or cool off.

308 saltwater crocodiles were captured in the Top End in 2021.

Man bitten by croc while spearfishing

A MAN is lucky to be alive after being bitten by a crocodile while spearfishing.

The 22-year-old was spearfishing in the East Arnhem region around 4am Tuesday when the crocodile attacked, wounding his arm and leg.

Police in Nhulunbuy were notified of the incident.

NT Police Senior Sergeant Xavier McMahon said the man’s injuries were not considered life-threatening but the incident was a reminder to be Crocwise.

“Due to the remote location of the incident, a community member transported the victim to Birany Birany,” he said.

“He was then airlifted to Gove District Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.”
