THE Northern Land Council could have a new permanent chief executive before the full council meets next week with interviewing due to begin on Monday.

Interim CEO Jak Ah Kit said while it would be unlikely the recruitment process would be completed before Friday’s meeting it was possible it would be a done deal by then.

Dr Ah Kit said a group of four executive council members would take on the preliminary interviews before either making a recommendation to the full executive or nominating a short list.

“On Tuesday afternoon if they wish, they will pick two of the best,” he said.

“They will then go to the executive for the executive to interview who they think is the best and they’ll make a decision there.”

Dr Ah Kit said whether the process was finalised before the end of the week would be up to NLC chairman Samuel Bush-Blanasi and deputy John Christophersen.

“That can be pushed through next week flat out or they might want to defer that until the week after given that we need to all be focusing on next week and the meeting with the full council,” he said.

“I’ll be guided by the chairman and the deputy chairman about what the process is for going to that second interview stage … so it could well happen after next week rather than be rushed but that’s not my call that’s the chairman and deputy chairman’s call.”

Dr Ah Kit ruled out throwing his own hat into the ring to stay on in the role permanently but said he would stick around during the transition if required.

“I’ve been there and done that 34 years ago, I’m passionate about the organisation, I’m passionate about the people, I’m passionate about the Territory moving forward with the land councils and how the Territory’s developed,” he said.

“(But) I don’t want the job because I think it should be for a younger person, male or female, who has a lot of oomph and desire and capability and potential and I just hope they pick it up and run with it and they point it in the right direction.”
