REPEAT youth offenders will be ordered to clean graffiti, clear weeds and do landscaping in a raft of new measures to tackle youth crime from the Gunner Government.

The measures also include a maximum 10-year sentence for an adult who recruits a youth to commit a crime and tougher bail compliance for repeat offenders including increased drug and alcohol testing.

Community Accountability Boards featuring businesses and elders will be created to establish community expectations.

The measures will be taken to the next election by the Gunner Government along with plans to increase police resources.

The School Based Constable program will be expanded and CCTV coverage will be increased into the suburbs.

Penalties for property crime will be reviewed.

On-the-spot fines for spitting at police officers introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic will stay in place.

The Gunner Government aims to recruit and train more Aboriginal community police officers and develop a 10-year infrastructure plan for remote stations.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner said offenders would face more consequences for committing crimes.

“Community work sentencing, more boot camps and tougher bail conditions mean more consequences for youth offenders,” he said.

“Territorians know this is a difficult issue with no silver bullet. It takes hard work and time to get it right.”

Police Minister Nicole Manison said the Government’s investments were starting to make a difference.

“Our alcohol policies are cutting violence and crime across the Territory,” she said.

“We have invested more than any other government when it comes to tackling crime, this includes more police with better resources, over 400 more CCTV cameras, and stronger penalties for youth offenders – like boot camps.

“We are also building a new detention centre.”
