NEW direct flights between Darwin and Canberra were launched on Monday, with the first taking off from Top End just after noon.

The new Qantas direct flights are expected to depart up to five times per week, with an average flying time of four hours and 15 minutes, shaving at least two hours off regular flights between the two cities.

The E190 aircraft that will service the new route can carry 94 passengers.

The new route was driven by demand for both destinations and reflects confidence in the long-term future of domestic tourism.

Airport Development Group chief executive Tony Edmondstone said the new route built on recent growth in the domestic travel market.

“Territorians love to travel and Covid has had a huge impact on destination choices. The launch of this new route gives us more options to travel to new destinations,” Mr Edmondstone said.

“Territorians can now fly directly to Canberra and enjoy many of the unique experiences on offer – from festivals and museums to wineries and art galleries.

“Equally Darwin and its surrounds are now directly accessible to travellers from Canberra.

“The Territory has been a very popular destination for travellers over the past 12 months and this new route will provide greater access for domestic travellers to fly here.”
